Rant: How I feel about Smut in Fiction

So I have been thinking about the subject for a while now and how I feel about it. ( For extent purposes ,I’m not talking about erotica which probably going to be its own post one day.)

Smut in Fiction rather it’s in books, fanfics ,or any type of media.

Before I dive into how I feel about it ,lets define what smut means.

Smut ( urban dictionary)- Highly developed stories with love lines and other things that appeal to women that also include a lot of sexually explicit scenes.

So it’s basically a story with sexual  scenes in it which is easy enough to understand. lol

So how do I feel about it you ask?

I love smut but I feel like smut  should be like a cherry on top of a banana split.

Something that you can still enjoy the banana split even if it’s on or off.  The cherry doesn’t mess up the experience of the eating the banana split even if the person do or don’t like cherries. The body of the banana split aka the banana and ice cream is what really matters and everything else aka cherries and other topping should just enhance the experience. What that being said ,smut shouldn’t mess up the reader’s experience of the book regardless if they like it or not. If they like smut they should enjoy it and if they don’t they can scan through or just skip those pages and still be able to enjoy the book.

Like I said earlier, I love smut but sometimes I feel like it can mess up a book and doesn’t need to be in there at all. It also can feel like it’s the only thing that holding that book together which I hate that feeling. I hate feeling like the only thing that good about a book is the sex and not the characters or the plot. I also hate it feeling like a chore where you are telling the characters “OK Get on with it cause we got more pressing issues to get to.” cause they are to busy trying to jump into each other pants and not solving things.  Smut should be something that is build up between two characters that have romantic tension and not just straight up lust. I should feel like the characters can do other activities together that is outside the bedroom. I should be cheering my ship declared their love and finally letting that sexual tension go not saying ” hurry up already!” Smut shouldn’t feel like a chore to the reader.

I’m about to give you some examples about how I feel about it.

Sarah J Maas.

I know same of y’all are like ” Hahaha yes Take her down” while others are like ” Noooo !Not her! She gets  enough flack as it is.”

Don’t worry I’m not going to be too hard on her.. 🙂

I love her dearly but I got to get her cause she hit or miss with her smut in both of  her book series..

In ACTOAR, she does it well to a certain extent but in Throne of Glass it’s get annoying to the max. She have this knack of once she gets her main couple together, they are constantly in the “honeymoon phase” and she goes overboard with it. It’s nothing wrong with that  because they are happy but it’s gets annoying when your main couple should be thinking of ways take down their enemy but they can’t keep their hands off each other for five seconds. I mean can y’all please go into a library looking for things to take down your enemy without thinking about putting your love on top of the desk to ravage her? Please?  Also it’s a war raging and you need your strength. Take your ass to bed in the war camp instead of playing hanky panky. Another thing that she did in ToG was she built the sexual tension up so much to the point that it become annoying that when it did happen, you sitting here like” Ok Can we get to more pressing issues please?”  It’s a time and place for it and she sometimes get that completely wrong.  I mean if it gets annoying to a person who likes smut how you think a person who don’t like smut feels? They probably want to vomit which I don’t blame them..

So I finish a book this past Friday called Firelight by  Kristen Callihan where the sexual tension and smut was amazing. The author knew how to set up where it didn’t feel like a chore and actually something enjoyable once it happen. You also felt that the two characters not only had sexual tension but were in love with each other as well. Also call me old-fashioned but please give me a declaration of love and all secrets out in the open before hitting the sheets please. Not to be cheeky but I want to cheer and have a huge smile on my face when the couple I invested 200 plus pages in getting to know them together or individually finally let all their feeling out and finally hit the sheets (or wall lol) Is not hard to ask for? I mean really? lol

In all honestly, I would rate a book low if I feel like smut is the only thing that holding it together. (This is the reason why I’m not including erotica in this since majority of them can be Porn without Plot aka PWP). Taming Beauty by Lynne Barron is one that I read recently that I felt that way and probably one of the main reasons I decided to write this. I said in my review  that it was the only thing that kept me finishing the whole book because it was the only thing I didn’t skim over.  The author spent more time writing the smut than actually writing the characters and romance between them since it felt like instalust to the max. At the end of book, I truly felt they didn’t love each other but just wanted to be in each pants all the time.

I would also not finish a book at all if I feel like that’s the only thing the characters will do but it’s a lot of issues between them that sex will not fix. A Strange Hymn by Laura Thalassa which I read last week is prime example of this. Now in the first book she did follow the pattern of building the sexual and romantic tension between them and it  accumulates with a love declaration before hitting the sheets. In the second one it feel like that the only thing that did in the first half in the book  which I didn’t finish at all. Their relationship went from having some substance to straight up to an unhealthy dose of “how many places can we bang and talk nasty? which become off-putting to the max.

So in conclusion, Smut should be the cherry on top of a story and not the whole banana split. You should be able to enjoy the story rather smut is there or not.

Tanya out!
